Dan Stephens wrote to bring these two services to my attention. They are an
excellent source of satellite/aerial imagery for making "Scanned Maps". Here is
Dan's email with links to both sources of maps.
USAPhotomap will download a Mercator projection topo or satellite map in
either two different resolutions and then create a jpg of whatever section you
want. That should give you a properly registered map for any place in the US.
If it is one of the few locations that has coverage, you can get color photos
in 2 very high resolutions as well. (Washington DC, Houston, Atlanta, LA,
Denver, the Bay area, Seattle and Chicago.)
TerraFetcher will download the same maps in the format that USAPhotomap
reads, but can download in a custom defined area (files on their site and on
the USAPhotomap site have counties and states already defined)
The images are from the Microsoft Terraserver. The photo and topo images
are public domain images from the Forestry Service. Once downloaded, they can
be used in any fashion, including commercially.
Both these products are free.
