New Domain Names

Way back in 1997 or 1998 when I first registered our main domain name of EOSS.ORG, I figured we were a non-profit which was pretty much the definition of a "Dot Org" domain and so picked that for our main internet address. I didn't think of us a commercial site and so didn't register .COM. We certainly weren't a network so I let .NET pass too. It wasn't too long after I passed on trying to get .com and .net that the practice of actually being what your Top Level Domains (TLD) said you were passed into quaint antiquity and anyone could register practically anything to most TLDs. I think they still check .EDU, .GOV, and .MIL registrations to ensure that the applicants are actually educational, government or military sites.

EOSS.COM is now owned by a Singapore based company that does logistical work for big oil companies. They've had the domain for a LONG time, maybe even before I got .ORG, but certainly soon after.

EOSS.net is a parked name. Someone thinks either EOSS.COM or EOSS.ORG is going to pay them (last quote I saw) $1800 for the domain name. I defer to EOSS.COM. However, I'd consider a more modest sum if the holder of that domain is tired of waiting.

On occasion new Top Level Domains (TLD) appear. Recently .CO and .US started allowing private registration. "Officially" they stand for Company (.CO) and United States (.US). I picked up EOSS.CO and EOSS.US. So you can now hand those out and they will automatically redirect to our .ORG site.

Yes, I know there are a slew of other TLDs, .BIZ, .INFO, .NAME to "name" a few, but other than what we currently own (EOSS.ORG, EOSS.TV, EOSS.CO and EOSS.US) I thought most of the others of not such great importance. But we are a company (.CO) and we are located in the US (.US) so...

All our domain names point to the main home page for EOSS, however, EOSS.TV is an exception. It points to the page were we occasionally show live activities, mainly TV. You can navigate away from that page to anywhere in the EOSS website, it is just a shorthand way of getting straight to video and other LIVE stuff, principally, links to live tracking via net based sites our airborne APRS payloads.

That's what's new with EOSS in the domain name game as of 8/16/10.
