EOSS Meeting Minutes, February 13, 2001

Mike Manes called the Edge of Space Sciences (EOSS) meeting to order at 7:00 following an informal technical meeting with the representatives from Pioneer Astronautics. We wish to recognize two new ground station members in attendance, Jeff Bretz, KB0ZXZ and Jim Beall, K0TOR. Welcome to ballooning.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and generally approved. The treasurers report indicated $3302.78 in the checking account and 162.23 in savings.

In an effort to avoid weather problems, we moved quickly to a discussion of EOSS #48 scheduled for March 24, 2001. In attendance from NOAA were Dr. Cece Girz, Dave Latsch and Tom (?, sorry Tom) . Sitting in the middle of the table was a 4-5 ft. tall lander built for this amazing flight. This flight is to test a turbine fan which will be used to inflate the NOAA balloons during flight which will adjust the altitude and thus adjust the location of the balloon. Got that? The lander is designed to protect the turbine when landing and incorporates crush pads on the feet and very light carbon legs. The entire assembly weighs less than two pounds.

The discussion continued regarding technical minutiae and a reference to the knuckle-dragging recovery folks . For more details of the GAINS program, see their web site at

A quick summary of EOSS #46 was provided by the Pioneer folks. The flight is scheduled for February 24. See the EOSS web page for details:

The election of officers followed. A motion was made to thank the officers of 2000 for their dedication and efforts to make the EOSS year of 2000 on of the most active and prolific in our history. The motion passed.

Also we would like to thank the members who ran for 2001 office. The club appreciates your willingness to participate in an officer capacity. Elected were:

  • President: Mike Manes, W5VSI
  • Vice President: Marty Griffin, WA0GEH
  • Secretary, Nick Hanks, N0LP
  • Treasurer, Merle McCaslin, K0YUK

Congratulations to the new officers and good luck in 2001. The meeting was adjourned at 9:30.

Respectfully submitted,

Marty Griffin, Secretary
