Recap of EOSS-109/110Tracker's Recapby Benjie Campbell, W0CBH What a landing zone. The roads were terrible. But we made it. Colin and I made a quick dash to Genoa early in the morning to locate a possible launch site and we found a good one. We then stayed and directed all the students into the area. It was the State highway mixing field where they stir up all the road mixtures they use on the highway in winter time. We had several new attendees at the launch site. Jim Hertzel and wife, and Billy Guthrie - W0UNX came out and participated in the launching of the two balloons. Jim and Jean (I think) drove to Limon and then teamed up with Marty and Al and learned all there is to know about Hoke and driving fast on dirt roads. The surface winds were very fast, but Merle and Richard got bot the balloons up. We had quite a group of students that helped with the cover sheet. Colin has some great pictures of the launches. The rest of the day went well. We saw some great country, and some very rough 4 wheel drive roads getting into EOSS 110 location. The owners were great, and helped us a lot. Colin and I met a hunter/guide on the east side of the landing areas. He hunts all over that area of Colorado and he gave us his name and phone number so we can utilize his knowledge and Rancher good will on future flights. He even showed Colin his hunting trophy pictures. Funny person, he had some great shots. Well, lots more to tell and no time. Looking forward to GPSL this year. Hope to see the rest of the ballooning crowd there. |
